Among the members of the Metropolitan Postcard Club of New York City are authors, psychotherapists, schoolteachers, a few postcard artists, a retired prison librarian and a former postal worker. Jacob Fields, one of the collectors, started when he was 13. “I have an old linen one. It’s a little girl and a dog, and the message says, ‘I caught a rat last night and kild it.’ ‘Killed’ is spelled ‘kild.’ It’s from the early 1900s. I’ve been collecting real photo postcards lately, so I got one that says, ‘Honeysuckle and Bee.’” @vincenttrullo photographed Jacob holding the postcard here. You don’t have to talk to a collector like Jacob long before the conversation turns existential. Postcard collecting — called #deltiology — is not usually a youthful pursuit. “Let’s face it,” said Rod Kennedy, the president of the #postcardclub. “We need to get new members. We need to get younger members.” Unless there is a new generation of postcard collectors, club members say, there will be no one to save postcards from the recycling plant.
