“When I first started realizing I wanted to tell stories from an African female perspective, I felt pretty lonely out there,” said @ダナイ・グリラ, a 39-year-old Zimbabwean-American actor and writer. Today, she's best known for her role as Michonne on @The Walking Dead, but her searing play “Eclipsed,” about captured women in war-torn Liberia, was staged on Broadway in 2016, and her drama “Familiar,” about a Zimbabwean-American family in Minnesota, is being presented next month at @woollymammothtc in Washington. When @ダナイ・グリラ started out, though, she said, “I had to be like a mad scientist and have the hypothesis that if I put a multidimensional narrative about an African woman in front of a Western audience, they will enjoy it.” Today, @ダナイ・グリラ — who was photographed here by @elizabethrweinberg — is not alone. And she’s thrilled to see other writers of African descent getting productions. Swipe left to see @bradogbonna’s photos of 3 other female American playwrights whose parents were immigrants from Africa: Jocelyn Bioh (@jjbioh), Mfoniso Udofia (@mfudofia) and Ngozi Anyanwu (@gozeface). “You can complain about how your culture is depicted,” @gozeface says, “or you can do it yourself.” Visit the link in our profile to read more about the women using the stage to tell of 2 worlds.
