Thousands of people living in the shadow of #MountMayon, one of the Philippines’ most active volcanoes, fled their homes this week after the mountain sprang to life. The peak, which reaches more than 8,000 feet above sea level, spewed lava and shot a huge ash plume miles into the air during a series of eruptions. On Wednesday, a large plume lingered over the mountain, in Albay Province. The eruptions raised the volcano’s alert level, indicating that a more hazardous eruption could be possible within days. The local authorities warned people to remain clear of a 5-mile “danger zone.” Government vehicles transported thousands from their homes, but some of the evacuated villagers have returned to check on livestock and belongings. What they’ve been finding: a ghostly landscape covered by a blanket of ash, a reminder of the looming threat. @jeszmann took this photo while on #nytassignment in the #Philippines.
