For the first time ever, the Taj Mahal is getting a serious cleaning. For more than 350 years, monsoon rains were enough to wash dirt off the structure’s walls. But pollution has gotten worse over the last couple of decades, and parts of the marble facade have turned yellow and black. Then there’s the Yamuna River, behind the monument, which also filled with sewage and other waste, attracting millions of mosquito-like insects. They settle near the backside of the #TajMahal and excrete a green substance on its walls during mating flights. Since 2015, workers have been scaling the monument’s minarets and walls to correct discoloration and remove layers of grime. It’s not easy. Suspended on scaffolding, they cake Fuller’s earth — a mud paste that absorbs dirt, grease and animal excrement — on the monument. Then the mud’s washed off, leaving a pristine surface. This year, they may face their biggest hurdle yet: restoring the monument’s dome. Some worry that the scaffolding may deter visitors. But Shamsuddin Khan, a longtime tour guide in #Agra, said he was unconcerned. “The Taj Mahal is going to remain the Taj Mahal,” he said. @lokeatul took this photo while on #nytassignment.
