Shown in the photo is the “Tondo” ritual held at the Misu Shrine in Fushimi-ku, Kyoto. This event is held early in the new year to purge evil spirits. On the shrine grounds, rice straw and reeds are piled around bamboo stalks to form a large tower-like pillar tied with ropes. On January 14, before dawn at six in the morning, the pillar is set on fire. Huge flames rise into the air, and the sounds of bamboo bursting can be heard as “Don! Don!”. What makes the size of the flames at this shrine’s Tondo ritual special can be traced back to a legend related to torch flames that has been passed down for generations in the area.
