Women cover their eyes in prayer during lbetashar, a Kazakh ritual in which the bride reveals her face. Weddings can be hours-long affairs, marked by family negotiations before the bride is accepted into the groom's family.

Personal Notes: For days we had been trying to find a wedding, asking many we met, even reaching kindly here through Instagram with a post asking many of you if a traditional wedding was taking place in the Aktau region of Kazakhstan...and thank you, to many, who did respond (scroll down my IG feed to May 11, 2016, to see all your wonderful responses). One afternoon when returning to the hotel in Zhanaozen, a bride and groom were using the backdrop of the lobby as a photo studio for their wedding portraits. Asking if their wedding day was near, they invited us to their nuptial...often this is how stories unfold, through serendipity. Two days later we were welcomed into the home of Guldana Myrzagalieva, as if family. There were many moments that gave so much to photography. Through the editing process at National Geographic, we chose this image of women to be published in the magazine, elders finishing prayers just after the wedding ceremony. So thankful Marilyn Monroe was also invited.
