South Koreans have been a dominant force on the international B-boy scene for 15 years. While on assignment for @nytimesfashion in Seoul, the photographer @anrizzy spent 5 days in November with the city’s elite #breakdancers. @anrizzy says that Korean #bboys have “taken what started in the Bronx and have adopted the style and culture and made something for themselves, that’s unique to them.” For them, fashion and function work hand in hand, he said. Beanies make it easier to spin on one’s head. 90’s-style sweatsuits allow for freer movement. Sneakers with thick soles are favored for their durability. And since men ages 18 to 35 are subject to South Korea’s mandatory 2-year military service requirement, #bboying is often a last chance to express their individuality. One #bboy, Yu Beom Sang (a.k.a Tyranny), put it best. When @anrizzy asked him about his dance uniform, he replied: “I call it freedom.” @anrizzy took this photo of Kim Ki Su, a.k.a. Rocket, of the Gamblerz crew crossing a street near the Dongguk University area. Swipe left or follow @nytimesfashion to see more photos.
