From the Rocky Mountain foothills, the coal-fired Dave Johnston Power Plant, outside Glenrock, Wyoming, looks like a small city at night. In the daytime, its giant chimneys and plumes of smoke dominate the skyline in Converse County. No place is more likely than this one to benefit from President Trump’s promise to make the U.S. a dominant energy force in the world — or more likely to be disappointed if the promise isn’t kept. This area has some of the country’s richest resources: the nation’s third-largest coal mine, its largest uranium production facility, 4 big wind farms, more than a thousand oil and gas wells, and this power plant. Since 2011, Shawn Gates has worked his way up to become a control room operator at the plant, making more than $40 an hour. He, his wife and their 4 kids live in a comfortable ranch house with a motorboat, an RV and a trampoline. “I think my job is fairly secure,” Shawn told @ニューヨーク・タイムズ. “I don’t think it would have been under Hillary.” But even as he praises President Trump’s goals, he sees warning signs.
