Embellished with an hallucinogenic jewel-like surface, this spellbinding watercolour embodies Moreau’s preoccupation with the intoxicating power of colour. As critic Charles Blanc wrote of the artist’s watercolours, it was as if he ‘had ground rubies, sapphires, emeralds, topazes, opals, pearls, and mother of pearl to make up his palette’.
