After the Russian Revolution, artists like Alexander Deineka looked to redefine the role of easel painting in the new Socialist society. His monumental 'The Coal Miner', painted after a trip to the Donbass coal mines in 1925, is the only surviving part of a much larger masterpiece known as 'At the Pit (In the Mine)'. It is not known why the artist decided to cut up the original canvas, or what happened to the other parts, but 'The Coal Miner' remained with Deineka in his studio until his death in 1969. The artist’s name is closely associated with the ideology of a ‘new epoch’ of art in the 1920s, of the notion of ‘a new life for a new people’. However, it was his outstanding talent alone that propelled him to the ranks of the global leaders of 20th-century modernism.
