Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto // Mute swan with day old cygnet – Even though I’ve worked extensively with mute swans over the last three years there remained certain aspects of their life cycle that I had been unable to document. One of those was the hatching of the eggs and those first few precious days and weeks when the cygnets spent large amounts of time on and around the nest. Earlier this year I was finally able to find a nest site that was accessible and where the swans were familiar with, and comfortable around the presence of people. This is when the time commitment of the work really kicked in. In the early days of incubation I would visit the nest site every day and I’d just go and sit at a comfortable distance from the swans, always talking to them in the same monotone voice and always ensuring that my approach was never too quick and never too assumptive. As the hatching time neared my once daily visits became twice daily and I always followed the same routine, always using the same tone of voice and by now the swans were extremely comfortable with and totally trusting of my presence. Building this relationship with certain species of wildlife is a vital part of my work and always behaving in a way that demonstrates that I mean no harm allows me to simply become a part of the scenery. So much so in fact that I effectively became a third parent for the swans, eventually trusted to guard the nest, and a day old cygnet whilst the two parents took the first two cygnets to hatch, two days previously, onto the water. This cygnet was the last one to hatch and for the first few months of her life she was always much smaller than her two siblings, and always much more keen to stick close to her mum, seen here gently preening in the background.
