Chinstrap Penguins on Blue Ice, Antarctica – photo by Kevin Schafer – @schaferpho @ナショナルジオグラフィック // We saw the blue ice from miles away, and turned irresistibly towards it, even before we saw the penguins gathered on top. These are Chinstraps, undergoing their annual molt, in which they shed their worn and tattered feathers and wait for the bright new ones to grow in. During this stage, they are no longer waterproof, so they must find a safe place to hang out for a few weeks. How they got to the top of this towering and magnificent iceberg, I simply do not know; perhaps the back side is less vertical. The smooth texture, and deep blue color, are signs of a dense chunk of ice that has repeatedly rolled over and been re-shaped by sea and storm. #chinstraps #blueice #wildlifephotography #penguinplanet #pinguinos #antarcticwildlife
