Happy Halloween from this spooky, blood-orange Halloween crab, photographed at the @auduboninstitute in New Orleans. This crab is named for its festive colors and measures only about 2 inches in length, making it not-so-terrifying to most predators. In order to compensate for its small size, this little crab will enter into a defensive pose when faced with a threat-- raising its claws in the air to make it seem larger while scuttling away as quickly as possible. Halloween crabs spend most of the daytime in underground burrows, but at night they can be found foraging along the beaches of Costa Rica, Panama and Nicaragua.
