An Endangered volcano rabbit, Romerolagus diazi, at the Chapultepec Zoo in Mexico City, Mexico. This species has a very small range which is now very fragmented because of agricultural and urban expansion leading to dramatic loss of habitat. The volcano rabbit is legally protected and there is a captive breeding program in Mexican zoos to try to save the species from extinction. The National Geographic Photo Ark is now supporting innovative on-the-ground conservation efforts to create lasting change and help save species at risk like the volcano rabbit through the new Nat Geo Photo Ark EDGE Fellowship program. In partnership with the Zoological Society of London’s EDGE of existence program, the fellowships will support future conservation leaders working to turn the tide for lesser-known species at risk.
