This slender sharksucker’s pad is used for attaching itself to other things, including sharks, sea turtles, whales and sometimes even scuba divers or boats. The pad is actually a highly modified dorsal fin that includes a complex system of muscles and bones that create suction by erecting and depressing the pieces of skin on its flat surface. These fish will attach themselves to other creatures in order to get a free ride as well as to feed on any food, debris or parasites that might come from their host.
This fish was photographed at @gulfspecimen Marine Lab in Florida where the goal is to continually educate the public by telling the true stories of marine life and the impact they have on the ecosystem.
