5 years after New York City’s deadliest hurricane in modern history, rebuilding continues. @ニューヨーク・タイムズ spoke with residents in New York and New Jersey whose lives were upended by #HurricaneSandy on October 29, 2012. In Seaside Park, New Jersey — where @jonahmarkowitz took this photo — Sandy brought 6 feet of water into homes on the west side of town. A year later, a fire caused by storm-damaged wiring consumed the boardwalk. Today, the town is still putting itself back together. (Swipe left to see more photos.) | Eyvette Martin spent 6 months in her ruined Far Rockaway bungalow with sodden drywall and no power. “I used to always say that I wanted to live on the water,” she said. “I had dreams and stuff. After that I said, ‘oh no, no, no.’” | Pedro Correa’s house in Oakwood Beach on Staten Island was swept up by the storm surge and pitched into a marsh hundreds of yards away. Insurance money went straight to the bank to pay off a sliver of the mortgage he still owed on the house. But then came help: The state bought more than 300 properties in Oakwood Beach at their pre-Sandy value, minus insurance payouts. “The governor saved my financial life,” he said.
