After spending years living under the hardships of Soviet Russia, Chagall, together with his wife Bella and their daughter Ida, settled in Paris in 1923. By this time, the French capital had returned to its vibrant, energetic pre-war state, and this painting captures a time that the artist later described as the happiest of his life.
