Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto // Mountain hare ears – There is always an image to find, even when your subject turns its back on you. I’ve always been drawn to images such as these, images that are inherently quite simple and yet, when executed correctly they can be quite effective. For me the key to this image was to hope that the hare would turn his back completely and, with his ears fully erect, I’d be able to create an element of symmetry with his striking form. Of course images such as these can also convey a poignant message about the potential perils of climate change and how increasingly exposed these already threatened animals will become if our climate continues to warm. A hares ability to turn this pure white was once an evolutionary advantage, allowing it to blend seamlessly with its snow covered mountain home but what was once an advantage has now become a distinct liability. As this hare looks out over an uncertain future I am minded of the importance to me of continuing to work with these beautiful mammals, and to continue to work alongside @onekindscotland to try and raise awareness of their plight, their value and the need to encourage the powers that be to grant these animals the protection that they so desperately need. In January-February of 2018 I shall be venturing back into the hills for 5 weeks to continue building my mountain hare story and so if experiencing these mammals for yourself is something that you’d like to do then please email me at tours@andrewparkinson.com to get more details.
