Image by @hammond_robin in northern Togo. The Pentecostal Church of Bokiccenag keeps Yendani Matthews (centre) chained most of the time to a tree in their grounds. They say it is because of his erratic behaviour, but they chain most of those with mental health problems who have come for healing. Ultimately it is fear, stigma and a lack of resources that has him restrained. He was brought to the church by his mother in the hope that prayer would heal him of his mental illness. To the left of Yendani is the supervisor of the church grounds, Douti Lankondjoua and to the right Douti Sambiani André - the church deacon. // Seeing a person in chains this way is distressing. So is that fact that Yendani and his mother do not have other options. Of course chaining someone to a tree is an abuse of human rights, but when the burden of mental health is so great, particularly on the poorest countries, and nothing is done to support them, one might question if governments, donors, rich countries should be accountable too. // We must not let ignorance be an alibi for inaction. Please join me in helping share the story of Yendani and thousands of others like him by following and sharing my new mental health campaign @onedayinmyworld // #InMyWorld is designed to expose the challenges faced by people living with mental health issues and give them the chance to be seen, heard and valued. This first phase of the campaign was created in collaboration with Handicap International @handicap_uk as part of Witness Change's work on global mental health. @witness_change is a nonprofit that aims to end human rights violations for marginalized communities through visual storytelling.
