A geographically diverse island filled with canyons, gorges, and mountains that reach as high as 4,921ft (1,500m), it is known as the island of mountains, wind and water. With sparse human development, nature lovers can find many idyllic hideaways such as this small picturesque village known as Fonatinhas. Perched on a narrow ridge filled with pastel colored houses, Fontainhas boasts some of the most spectacular views of the steep vertical valleys that drop off directly into the Atlantic ocean below. With a landscape like this, it’s no wonder that Santo Antão offers some of the most amazing hiking in West Africa.
