Want to relive your sleep-away camping days? Club Getaway, a sleep-away camp in Litchfield County, Connecticut, lets adults do just that. In September, though, Club Getaway hosted a particularly campy theme weekend: the inaugural Camp John Waters. In came #JohnWaters fanatics from as far away as Australia and Chile, towing beehive wigs and cat-eye glasses. To his fans, John Waters is a countercultural demigod, a dirty class clown at 71. His gleefully transgressive films, including “Pink Flamingos,” created a topsy-turvy world in which gross is glamorous, housewives are homicidal, and the noblest title one can achieve is Filthiest Person Alive. So it was only fitting that Camp John Waters had an upside-down spirit. The campers were a self-selecting group of exhibitionists and oddballs for whom his movies were a beacon of belonging. On Saturday night, they gathered for a costume contest, judged by Waters himself. Here, @andrewwhitey photographed 2 campers paying homage to the aforementioned film. After the contest, #JohnWaters slipped out the back door and stood beneath the pines, elated. “It’s like Jonestown, but with a happy ending,” he said. Visit the link in our profile to read more.
