Now that the ferocious, 9-month battle to liberate #Mosul from ISIS militants is over, the city has turned its attention to recovering those bodies and returning them to their families. The city’s Civil Defense workers are focused on the devastated Old City district, where ISIS fighters made their last stand. When @ivorprickett accompanied them in September, it took most of a day for a rotating crew of more than 10 men using an excavator to retrieve just 2 bodies. Here, Nadhira Aziz watched as they dug out the bodies of her sister and niece from her house, where the 2 women were killed by an airstrike in June. Nadhira sat in her plastic chair 15 feet from the excavator. At times she was engulfed in dust whipped up as the driver dumped mounds of stone and parts of her house beside her, but she refused to move. She directed the driver and shouted at the men on the ground to retrieve books and bags that she saw poking out of the debris. By the end of the day she was surrounded by a pile of tattered belongings that she wanted to bring with her. When the men said they were unable to bring all of the belongings with them, she almost refused to leave. Visit the link in our profile to read more.
