Almost half a million Rohingya have recently fled Myanmar, where they have faced persecution for generations. Though the refugees are mostly in camps in neighboring Bangladesh, they have also been trickling into the United States. In Chicago, around 400 families have settled in Rogers Park, on the city’s North Side. It’s the largest concentration of #Rohingya in the country. The photographer @ali_lapetina wanted to capture their quest to assimilate into American life while staying true to their traditions. One thing about the Rohingya refugees quickly became clear, she writes: “Shared experiences have brought the community particularly close.” The Rohingya Culture Center in Chicago, the Jamia mosque and the Shwe Myanmar grocery store have become neighborhood hubs, where people meet, worship, shop and get social services. Last month, @ali_lapetina took this photo of children shouting, “Please save Rohingya,” as their bus left a rally in support of the community last month in #Chicago.
