When her new @bet late-night talk show has its premiere on Thursday, @robinthede said it will include plenty of staples: topical jokes about politics and pop culture, comedy sketches and musical performances. But “The Rundown With Robin Thede” will also have one thing that the #latenight has lacked for several years: a black female host. (@robinthede has broken ground on late-night TV before: When she joined “The Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore” as its head writer, she became the first black woman in late-night TV to hold such a title.) She knows this will set her apart from her many competitors — a distinction that she embraces, but one that she doesn’t want to overemphasize. What will ultimately bring an audience to the show, she told our reporter Dave Itzkoff, is the chance to laugh and “to get an authentic opinion about stories they’re not going to hear anywhere else.” As she prepared to shoot a test show recently, she noted several stories that “The Rundown” could mine for material: athletes protesting racial injustice; OJ Simpson’s release from prison; facial-recognition software that misidentifies black people.
