Fast-moving #wildfires raged across several counties in Northern California today, killing at least 1 person, forcing the evacuation of up to 20,000 people and destroying hundreds of buildings. Firefighters were battling blazes in 8 counties: Napa, Sonoma, Lake, Mendocino, Yuba, Nevada, Calaveras and Butte. “This is really serious,” Governor Jerry Brown said at a news conference. “It’s moving fast. The heat, the lack of humidity and the winds are all driving a very dangerous situation and making it worse. It’s not under control by any means. But we’re on it in the best way we know how.” California was hit by #fires throughout the summer. Late last month, several blazes led to the evacuation of about 1,000 people in Southern California. The worst fires in #NorthernCalifornia tend to hit in October, when dry conditions prime them to spread fast and far as heavy winds buffet the region. “I’ve been with the department for 31 years and some years are notorious and they’re burned in your memory,” said Janet Upton, a deputy director of @calfire. “I’m afraid that 2017 is going to be added to that list now.”
