“We’re flush with important, popular, critically adored, award-winning music by women,” writes @wsslyy, a staff writer for @nytmag and critic for @ニューヨーク・タイムズ. “America can’t go 10 minutes with hearing about Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Adele, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga. Most of the narratives in popular-music culture currently belong to them.” But what happens in 20 years? Will they achieve canonhood? @wsslyy argues that canons amount to something: “They are, in part, what corroborates greatness. They’re what help keep Dylan, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones — and more recently, acts like Nirvana, Radiohead and Kanye West — next to godliness, not unreasonably.” And so this summer, @wsslyy listened to only female singers. He cooked and ate while listening to these albums. He listened to them at the gym. He took them to bed. Over the course of 3 months, he stamped a lot of records and artists “underrated.” And while listening to @joan_osborne’s “Relish,” which is often overshadowed by “One of Us,” he realized how vital the rest of her singing was and still is. @ilonaaszwarc took this portrait of #JoanOsborne while on assignment for @nytmag in New York.
