Earlier today, a young Rohingya boy showed the photographer @sergeyponomarev this drawing of his experiences fleeing from his home in Myanmar to Bangladesh. For decades, Myanmar’s Muslim #Rohingya have faced systemic repression by the country’s Buddhist majority, and particularly by the military. In August, the military and allied mobs began burning whole villages. Across refugee camps in Bangladesh, all of those who escaped — even the young — have accounts of fire and cruelty. @sergeyponomarev, who’s on assignment for @ニューヨーク・タイムズ in #Bangladesh, took this photo earlier today at the #Balukhali camp outside Cox's Bazar. Balukhali is not so much a defined camp as a “dense collection of bamboo and tarp stacks,” as our journalist @bcsolomon reported recently. Swipe left to see 2 more recent scenes @sergeyponomarev captured at camps like this one: people crossing a makeshift bridge and boys sharing an umbrella to shield themselves from the rain.
