In the spring of 1988, Katsu Naito moved to 112th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue, in Harlem. A newcomer to the area, he worked up the courage to ask if he could take his neighbors’ pictures, and no one said no. His photographs from the early-nineties, which are collected in the new book “Once in Harlem,” are both of a piece with their surroundings and startlingly direct in their gaze.
