Of the Las Vegas shooter's twenty-three guns, it has been reported that twelve were outfitted with “bump stock” devices—inexpensive gun accessories that enable semiautomatic firearms to mimic automatic gunfire. They’re just one in a whole class of products that do so, which are not subject to federal regulations and are legal in all but a handful of states. Yesterday afternoon, California senator Dianne Feinstein reintroduced a bill that would outlaw bump stocks and accessories designed to mimic a machine gun’s rate of fire. Click the link in our bio for a primer on how such devices function, and why they’re legal. Illustration by Harry Campbell.
