The symbolism of #flags fascinated Howard Hodgkin. The simple stripes and colours carry the weight of a whole country, just as the stripes and colours of his own work carry the weight of #emotion and #memory. They inspired him, and in turn they fed his work, appearing in prints and paintings such as In a French Restaurant (1977–9) ? here.
