Mdm Halimah Yacob was sworn in as our 8th President this evening.

Mdm Halimah is our first Malay President since the first President, Encik Yusof Ishak, 47 years ago. She is also our first female President.

Her life story reminds us that the Singapore Story is one of hope and opportunity. Here, no matter where we begin in life, if we work hard, we will have ample chances to do well. And when we make good, we have a responsibility in turn to help others.

Mdm Halimah’s swearing-in today is a significant moment in our history. On 9 August 1965, at the moment of our independence, Mr Lee Kuan Yew pledged that this would not be a Malay nation, a Chinese nation, nor an Indian nation. Everybody would have his place, equal, regardless of language, culture, religion. Today, we reaffirmed that pledge.

Our President is the unifying figure of our nation and represents all Singaporeans. I am confident that Mdm Halimah will fit into this new role, and perform it with distinction.
