Bring a little laughter into your life with this Exceptionally Rare and Large Gilt-Lacquer Bronze Figure of Budai. Dated Jiajing 4th year, corresponding to 1525, this God of Happiness represents plentitude and wisdom of contentment. The inscription at the back of the base reads 'Jiajing sinuan□□yue□ bairi Neiguanjian xinguan Liang Ji zao', which translates to 'made by official Liang Ji from the Neigongjian, □hundred □□day, month, 4th year of Jiajing', suggesting that it was created by the high ranking Liang Ji, the Directorate of Palace Servants in the early 16th century. To be offered in our Important Chinese Art auction on 13 September, #SothebysAsianArt exhibitions will be open until the last auction, Saturday Sotheby’s: Asian Art, takes place on 16 September.
