Just back from #Guyana, and the community of #Moruca, the largest indigenous community in Guyana, located in Region 1. In Moruca, an #Arawak man cools off from the midday heat in a forest pool near the village of Santa Rosa. Guyana still has 77% of its original forest cover and the nine indigenous peoples, with the help of Amerindian People’s Association (APA) and the Rainforest Foundation (rainforestfoundation.org), are working to title their traditional territory and defend their environments and homeland from illegal logging, mining, and industrial agriculture. Numerous studies have shown that rainforests protected by indigenous communities have the lowest rates of deforestation forests in the world. In Guyana, I was helping the APA with their Indigenous Youth Media project, an initiative also supported by the Rainforest Foundation. We were training an amazing group of young people in media skills that will help to give them and their communities the ability to tell their own stories about their lives, their ancestral traditions and lands, and the issues that are affecting them and their environment.
