The bird was found on the rocky shore by Sea Aquarium manager Chris Richards, who took it too Doest’s veterinary practice in Julianadorp. Wildlife rehabilitation is a process that involves safely capturing, examining, diagnosing, and treating the animals using proper veterinary and hospital care, feeding, physical therapy, exercise, medicating, and a pre-release conditioning program. Releasing must be carefully planned so that it occurs not only when the animal is ready, but also in the right habitat, location, season, and even weather.
Because of its wing-injuries, Odette was not able to release this bird back into the wild but didn’t want to euthanise the otherwise healthy animal. She named the bird ‘Piper’ and took him in as part of the wildlife education program of her Fundashon Dier en Onderwijs Cariben, a non-profit organisation that facilitates research and education to benefit nature and conservation on the island of Curaçao.
