On her new album, “Grace,” @lizzwrightmusic mixes the sanctified with the political, the sexual with the social. The 37-year-old artist recorded the album soon after last year’s presidential election. What had been planned as an ode to the American South became a declaration of redoubled faith. “Grace,” which traipses across a landscape of music from the last 100 years, seems to draw its energy straight from the soil, with acoustic and electric guitars, organ and piano locked in an earthy symbiosis. “I wanted to capture the sweetness of the South, and of my coming from it, and my experience of it,” @lizzwrightmusic told our writer Giovanni Russonello. #LizzWright was raised in small-town Georgia. Today she splits her time between Chicago and the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Her neighbors there are older, and mostly white; their politics run far more conservative than hers. But, she said, “I found, through conversations about the earth and about the house with my neighbors, a lot of common ground.” She dedicated “Grace” to her next-door neighbor, who’s 92. @johnny_autry took this portrait of @lizzwrightmusic, who will celebrate the album’s release next Friday at the @highlineballroom.
