@erikaprodriguez photographed this fallen tree this morning in a residential part of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Nearly 70% of households in Puerto Rico were without power after #HurricaneIrma made direct hits on Barbuda, St. Barthélemy, St. Martin, Anguilla and the British Virgin Islands, and raked the U.S. Virgin Islands and #PuertoRico. The death toll from the storm — one of the strongest ever recorded in the Atlantic — stood at 11 this morning, but the authorities said it would rise. The Category 5 #hurricane left Barbuda in shambles, damaging 95% of its buildings and leaving the island “barely habitable.” In Puerto Rico, almost 50,000 people were without water. Around 11 a.m., the storm’s eye was off the northern coast of Hispaniola, which is shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic. #Irma is likely to move near the Turks and Caicos Islands and the southeastern Bahamas tonight, before coming close to Cuba. Meanwhile, 2 other storms are brewing in the region. Visit the link in our profile for live updates.
