He arrived in Canada as a 16-year-old Somali refugee with nothing of his own but a change of clothes. Now, 24 years later, he's the country's immigration minister. @ahmeddhussen has rarely talked about his journey. On the few occasions he has publicly recounted his first vulnerable months in Toronto, Hussen trumpets the “every day generosity of Canadians who helped me each and every step of the way.” Still, Hussen registered for high school, learned to cook and landed his first job all on his own. He also put himself through college and law school before being named the country’s immigration czar, the first refugee in that powerful cabinet position. In his first months on the job, Hussen has become known for his steady hand on one of the country’s most delicate files, promoting Canada’s increasingly rare open door to immigrants and refugees while remaining diplomatic about the slamming doors elsewhere. Hussen sees his job as “trying to leave Canada in decent shape. To me, giving back to Canada is very personal.” @ianwillms photographed @ahmeddhussen at the Amesbury Canada Day Celebration earlier this year in #toronto.
