The World at Night photography
Swipe left to see the entire image of Himalayas, the roof of the world. Stars above Mt Everest in a moonlit night of Nepal. This was a crystal clear night in fall 2009, hiking at slightly under 4000 meters (12000ft) altitude in Sagarmatha National Park, a World Heritage Site. While the light of fading twilight is visible on the high peaks, moonlight is the main source of illumination here. Everest is on the left (8840m), then comes Lhotse (the world's 4th highest at 8516m), and the outstanding Ama Dablam (6812m) is at right end, where the Pleiades or the Seven Sisters star cluster, rises above it. A Buddhist stupa is also visible along the main trail to the Everest Base Camp. The light in the valley is from the Tengboche Monastery, an important religious center for Sherpa community. Sagarmatha, also the local name for Everest, is a Sanskrit word with several meanings such as forehead of the sea or sky, the mother of the sea or the world. The area contains the southern half of Everest, the rest is in Tibet with even more dramatic view.
