Young Samburu men meet black rhinos for the first time in their lives at Lewa Wildlife Conservancy (@lewa_wildlife). If you went back 50 years, this is where one of the densest populations of black rhinos lived but today most people living here have never seen a rhino in their life despite it being the most perfect habitat for them. In 2 generations, this animal was poached almost to extinction.  Much needed attention has been focused on the plight of wildlife and the conflict between heavily armed poachers and increasingly militarized wildlife rangers, but very little has been said about the indigenous communities on the frontlines of the poaching wars and the incredible work they do to protect these animals. These communities hold the key to saving Africa's great animals.
I'm Ami Vitale (@amivitale) and I've spent the past 8 years discovering and documenting unique conservation efforts in northern Kenya that protect wildlife, people, and cultures alike.
