30 yrs ago (two days after his 29th bday) MJ released #Bad lp & short film on 8/31/87. the murder of #BDP's #ScottLaRock's the week before was still on my mind (lil did i know this will occur again & again) i was also curious how @WendyAndLisa also out that day would fare since leaving @TheRevolution last yr. i woke up early & exhausted thinkin bout it all. '87 was a new day. 86 was all about Janet. #Control was takin names & kickin ass & not lettin up. 87 was hip hop's true arrival year too-----1) #LicensedToIll was recruiting the suburbs, 2) #BiggerAndDeffer was a mainstream monster. 3) the 2 mth old #RebelWithoutAPause was a beautiful nightmare you could use to piss parents off. #Rakim & #NWA WERE the new testament.----Mike no longer had Prince/Lionel/Madonna/Rick/Bruce to deal w. he was up against an unstoppable culture....and himself. statistically I'm shocked he made a followup to #OffTheWall even---let alone #Thriller. history has shown followup records are delayed (hello Lauryn/Dangelo/Erykah/RATM) or become so crippling they do complete 180s: some plans backfire & become even MORE successful (#SgtPeppers #KidA #Harvest) some wipe slate clean of their past (#PaulsBoutique #PetSounds) some got dark real quick (#Low #TheresARiotGoinOn) some ignored the history before it (#DirtyMind #JourneyThroughTheSecretLifeOfPlants)---some ruffle feathers initially (#BitchesBrew) most just did themselves in even if final results were amazing (#Smile)---the fear of crash landing is more fearful than the journey, hard work, rejection & anxiety that leads to success. think about it, would you rather be rejected & fail.....or to have made it only to be kicked out and replaced? so is it self sabotage or "artistic growth" ????? i still don't know how i feel about #Bad now. i mean its not a fail nor is it my go to MJ album. jams are all there. weird questionable moments too (this was OG album cover btw). definitely know that this was the 1st time my friends & i were not united on the MJ front (defending his every move wasn't fun either ?) but in the end there was no being on earth CLOSE to him. Still an achievement.
