1981. Michael Joeseph Jackson. Age 23. Hard to believe there was a time in which the words "yeah, but will it be as big as #OffTheWall?" came from our mouths. MJ started the process of creating the songs for #Thriller during the #TriumphTour w his brothers in 81.

Stakes was high, the number 1 black attraction in music (JB) was no longer the biggest box office draw he was 10 yrs earlier (actually this was his "comeback" period due to an inspired cameo in the #BluesBrothers) #EWF raised the stakes in 74 by utilizing magician #DougHenning to the mix.(now Verdine would levitate mid bass solo, floating pyramids & aliens) #PFunk was always high theater---psssh since 70 it's no wonder their live stage show raised the stakes in 76 w an actual floating UFO. By the end of the decade it was on once #TheJacksons got onboard w a real budget. This tour wound up being the blueprint that would forever mark the next 5 tours that jackson would do til his last day on earth.
The mark of pure genius is when even if you have limited resources you still wind up shining. Take for instance #Motown25 (especially if you were fortunate enough to witness it 1st hand) he will forever be remembered & defined by the #BillieJean performance. A performance w no platform stage, no lasers, no exploding smoke bombs, no Randy to torch light a device that will explode (always confused why he was the villain chasing & blowing up the brothers during shows---like he'd dance & Congo solo & then *snap* he's throwing you in a fire pit w no explanation. I mean duh we know it's you wearing that mask man) ---there are 0 effects. He's not even SINGING live! But that will wind up being his most pure, his most loved performance that he will be defined by.
So see this tour as that: no distracting LED screens. No extra dancers. No protools---none of the trappings of making something so perfect you choke the life out of it. This was low budget elbow greased guts & talent. Cause at the end of the day when you take all the elements away are you still left with the magic? Watch the clip and tell me.
