1977. Michael Joeseph Jackson. Age 19. MJ was havin his 2nd mid life crisis before the ripe 'ol age of 21 strugglin to escape everyone's expectations of being the cute pinchable kid who sang "ABC...123". The bros were stuck somewhere ibetween puberty vs adulthood & contextualizing/rehashing Motown's past. Look--i consider Motown just as powerful a mighty "M" with the same strength that the two other M's (Malcolm & Martin) were during the civl rights era. the 70s was time to boogiedown. Half of their joints were 12/8 meter fodder my folks were into like #DaddysHome & #LittleBittyPrettyOne -----it's like if the label made Migos cover Diana Ross' "Im Comin Out"----oh wait.... look i realize I'm paintin a bleak pic. specially when you realize cover song in the 70s was key to cla$$ic catalogue legacy that will pay off decades later. (sidetone: every Beatle song i've ever heard was by everyone BUT the Beatles so yeah cover songs helped school me in my young days until i was old enough to know better. by the 70s? the entire stable was out of control: Diana was eyein hollywood; Smokey realized life behind the scenes was where it was at; The Temps & Tops were at other labels & the remaining staring lineup where stretchin the game x-ing your name out & puttin marvin & stevie on top. naturally as kid brother: The Jackson 5 wanted to be doing ANYTHING but old establishment shtick. yet, that's the SOULgatory hell they wound up in: the hits were slowin down & the safe space was the vegas circuit & now songs like #ByTheTimeIGetToPhoenix & #DannyBoy were just as important to their presentation as #SugarDaddy & #IllBeThere was----so of course Papa Joe was able to nuance a deal to bring this to primetime tv living rooms (70s:variety show 00::reality show 10:::competition shows) i was elated because now my superheroes are on tv everyweek. MJ said many times this was killing him inside. but until THEY came on the scene the status quo was killing ME inside. don't get me wrong: i was watching #HeeHaw #SheildsAndYarnell & #TheMuppetShow w the rest of america but even in this lull of a brief moment you see the inkling sparkle of what's coming around the corner.
