*Letter from the FBI to MLK encouraging him to commit suicide accompanied with surveillance tapes of him* Yesterday was the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I have a dream" speech and the March on Washington. While the imagery of select parts of his speech are conjured quite frequently, it is important to remember the FULL legacy of what MLK left behind, as he fought for social, political and economic equality. COINTELPRO was a program formed by the FBI with the exclusive purpose of spying on, harassing, infiltrating, disrupting and discrediting Civil Rights and Black Liberation leaders including MLK, Malcolm X, The Black Panthers, etc. . The operations of the COunter INTELligence PROgram were done covertly and often used illegal tactics (google "COINTELPRO" for tons of info) that we don't even know the full extent of today. I bring this up for 2 reasons. Firstly, it's important to realize that the U.S. government has ALWAYS had a stake in maintaining white supremacy. And by white supremacy I mean, the diversion of power into the hands of white (and particularly wealthy) folks. The tactics of this have changed, but the goal is still the same, even if they aren't explicitly stated as such. And thus, we need not be surprised when these tactics are uncovered, but we must actively anticipate them. And secondly, because white folks often bring up the more flowery language of MLK that does not offer a direct challenge to white people and their comfort, white supremacy and the United States as a whole. . But MLK was not killed or called the "most dangerous Negro in the future of this nation from the standpoint of communism, the Negro, and national security" by the FBI because he talked about images of Black and white children holding hands. To honor his full legacy, I believe that we, as white people who receive advantages based on race, must organize and work to end white supremacy in all it's forms. In schools, we are taught a few sentences of "I Have a Dream" because it doesn't challenge the status quo. We are not taught about his statement that “The evils of capitalism..." **(Swipe photo for more)** @wp4rj @blmlosangeles #BlackLivesMatter
