A few weeks ago, a veteran LAPD officer was arrested for statutory rape of a 15 year old in the cadet program. Here, I speak at the Police Commission meeting to the board of commissioners about the direct parallels between rape culture and the "Blue Wall of Silence," in which officers protect each other through a code of silence that directly harms the communities that they are meant to serve. When is the last time you saw a video of a police officer stopping another officer from harassing, beating, or murdering a civilian? This culture is so normalized, that many of us rarely even recognize or think about the complicity of the surrounding officers in cases of police violence. .
As part of @wp4rj #WhitePeople4BlackLives , the organization has released a solidarity statement (link in bio) with @blmlosangeles to uplift their demands, a primary one being for Mayor Garcetti to #FireBeck , the chief of police in LA, for leading the most murderous law enforcement agency in the country. And for supporting a code of silence in which Beck says he will "protect" police officers like the "vests they wear." And we know that this includes protecting them from being held accountable too. Mayor Garcetti will not hold Beck accountable willingly. He must be pushed to do so by the people LA, before he continues to dig a deeper into the hole of weakening police accountability (like he did by backing Charter Amendment C).
