Many People of Color and anti-racist activists have been talking about "White supremacy" for a long time. But white supremacy is something that a lot of white folks are newly talking about in the wake of #Charlottesville (check out SURJ's Discussion Guide on Talking White Supremacy Post-Charlottesville). "White supremacy" is actually far more pervasive than most white people realize. White supremacy is an ideology that is taught to us since birth as we grow up in a racist society. It permeates the minds of even the most well-intentioned white folks and the institutions that we are a part of, until we actively seek to change them. In many ways, it is taught by what is *not* said. It normalizes various forms of violence and dehumanization like police brutality, mass incarceration, stereotypical/biased media portrayals and homelessness/poverty and by *not* teaching us how it is linked to the history of this country and the racism that is ever-present in our institutions today. Fortunately, there is another path. We can actively educate ourselves out of our complacency and ignorance to take ACTION against everyday racism. We don't have to wait for white supremacist terrorists to murder someone before we think about what we can do to end all areas of white supremacy in our country. As white people, it our duty to stand up to white supremacy. It is our duty to learn about what that means and make that a part of our everyday consciousness. BE IN ACTION. Don't just talk about it, Be about it! White folks if you agree with what I'm saying, START DOING SOMETHING today. In LA, check out @wp4rj and elsewhere, look for how to get involved with your local Showing Up For Racial Justice or Black Lives Matter chapters. #SURJ #M4BL #defendcville #blacklivesmatter #endwhitesilence #wearethemajority Thank you @JLovecalderon for putting this video together!
