This week has been so intensely overwhelming in the most awful and beautiful ways. I've led a group of 30 women through twice a day heartfelt yoga and sharings during our @109world mission trip for female empowerment and healing. The purpose of the trip has been to raise funds and awareness for the Panzi Hospital in Congo, where the renowned Dr Mukwege works tirelessly to help survivors of rape and sexual abuse. In Congo rape is used as a legitimized weapon of war and the atrocities that take place there every day has at times been too much for us to take in. We've met and spoken to a Congolese woman, Divine Blessing, who after suffering through inexplicable horrors her entire life fled with her four children, while pregnant with her fifth, to Sweden, all alone. She finally found refuge here and now she tells her powerful story to anyone and everyone who will listen. "Speaking of what happens to us is the only way to heal", she says. It's true. We've also worked with the incredible @thordiselva who wrote a book together with her perpetrator and has dedicated her life to changing the way society views rape and how in almost every case, the blame is put on the survivor. We came here thinking we would be supporting women in some country far far away... But what came up during this week was so close to home. Over 80% of women in the group had suffered through sexual abuse or rape themselves - some memories surfaced during these very days. Some women spoke up about their experience for the very first time in their lives. According to The WHO more than 1 in 3 women will experience rape or sexual abuse in this lifetime, but the dark numbers are staggering and most likely much, much higher. If we haven't had an experience ourselves we all know someone - a girlfriend, a sister, a loved one, who has. The question is: what is being done to fix this massive global problem that is only spoken about behind close doors? Truth is, it's not a women's issue. Its a humanitarian issue. Above all -it's a mans issue! 94-97% of all perpetrators are male. I will speak more on this during the next coming days as I digest this incredibly powerful week. Read more on www.109world.com?
