Cheers erupted in a South African courtroom on Aug. 8, 2017, as South African President Jacob Zuma survived a no-confidence vote in parliament—following the most serious attempt yet to unseat him after months of rising anger over alleged corruption and a down economy. Zuma had survived six previous attempts in parliament to dislodge him. Opposition parties hoped the move would encourage disgruntled legislators with the ruling African National Congress party to vote against Zuma, who has faced numerous allegations of graft while the economy has fallen into recession.⠀
