Sam Kanizay, 16, decided to soak his feet in the water at a Melbourne beach late on Aug. 5 after a soccer match. But when he stepped out a half-our later, blood was pouring from his feet and ankles due to multiple bites from mysterious sea critters.⠀

A leading theory is that the teen became a meal for sea lice. But when sea lice chomp on humans they usually leave tiny rashes, not blood. One professor briefed on the matter told The New York Times that the bites were not from sea lice, but amphipods, which he says don't typically bite people.⠀
