Photo by @FransLanting Beyond the famous National Parks and National Monuments, there are many other public lands in the USA that are administered by the Department of the Interior. The American idea of preserving large wild landscapes for generations to come has been an inspiration to people around the world, and my hope is that the US will continue to do that. The Bureau of Land Management is charged with looking after many millions of acres of wilderness areas, but it barely has the resources to do so. And that is before the cutbacks that are now contemplated in Washington, D.C. Here’s one amazing place I covered while doing an aerial survey of the Colorado Plateau on assignment for @ナショナルジオグラフィック. It’s the San Rafael Swell in central Utah; it’s remote, but that does not mean it’s protected forever. Imagine what this landscape will look like if it would be crisscrossed by access roads for mineral extraction. There is lots of shale in the San Rafael Swell and that often means there are oil and gas deposits not far away. Add your voice to the conversation if you care.
