In this letter to Clive Wigram [Assistant Private Secretary to King George V], dated 20 September 1917, General Henry Rawlinson [Commander of the Second Army] reports on the initial stages of the Battle of Menin Road Ridge. My Dear Clive, The attack that was launched this morning by the V & II Armies on a front of eleven Divisions seems to have gone very well. Thought it is difficult to know for certain the exact positions it is clear that the attack was a distinct success and nearly all objectives were gained and held until 6. p.m. this evening. The II Army were particularly successful in the neighbourhood of Polygon wood and the Menin road where the Anzac and X Corps gained the whole of their objectives without heavy loss. On their right the 19 Div[ision] also won the whole of the ground allotted to them but their Commander Tom Bridges was wounded in the leg by a shell though not very seriously. Freyburg V.C. was also wounded by a shell in three places. Casualties on the whole however are not heavy. The Guards Div[isions] were not engaged. The gain of ground in the neighbourhood of the Polygon wood is very important for it will very materially assist future operations which will be preceded with at once. The enemy do not appear to have put up a very stubborn fight in the first instance though in certain places they have counter attacked with vigour this afternoon, we may expect more of these tomorrow. The hostile barrage was strong on the V Army front but came down too far back to do much damage- in haste Yours ever Rawlinson Copyright: Royal Archives © Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II
